The great French philosopher Paul Ricœur owes his fame not only to his critical engagement with movements such as psychoanalysis, structuralism, and critical social theory but also to his subtle reflections on complex and difficult issues such as metaphor, text, narration, and time, from which arises the demand for a phenomenological interpretation of the subject that comes into direct conflict with the Cartesian and Kantian tradition of cogito.
This contentious demand is realized with exemplary clarity in his book "The Self as Another" - undoubtedly, one of his most significant works overall - which was first published in French in 1990.
Particularly noteworthy, in this context, is the coupling of his interpretive approach to the subject with a "minor ethics" that culminates in the claim to expel the individual-centered "I" so that the "self" can emerge, which is constituted through a critical encounter with the radical alterity of the other.
