A famous model of ecological and innovative farming in Europe, the Bec Hellouin Farm is the life project of Perrine and Charles Hervé-Gruyer, authors of the book. The farm was established in 2004 in Normandy and, despite initial difficulties, has managed to create a generous oasis of life on barren land that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Perrine and Charles' approach is based on techniques of natural farming and primarily on permaculture, a cultivation technique guided by nature, aimed at utilizing sustainable resources, designing human settlements that function as productive ecosystems, without waste and without the use of fossil fuels. Working exclusively by hand, Charles and Perrine produce abundant and high-quality harvests on very small areas, while also creating humus, improving biodiversity, beautifying landscapes, storing carbon in the soil and in trees.
A agronomic study conducted in collaboration with prominent researchers demonstrates the social, economic, and ecological validity of permaculture, which describes a new way of practicing the profession of farmer in the 21st century and potentially constitutes a reservoir of millions of jobs.
Through this sincere and unique testimony of the two authors about their efforts, the reader can get to know two people with a deep love for the land and a vision for the future. The book contains valuable advice for professional farmers and amateur gardeners, but even if the reader has never engaged in cultivation, they will surely enjoy the story of Perrine, Charles, and their farm.
About Perrine and Charles Hervé-Gruyer: Perrine Hervé-Gruyer had a career as a lawyer in Asia before dedicating herself to psychotherapy. Having studied Education, Charles Hervé-Gruyer traveled the planet with the oceanographic vessel Fleur de Lampaul for twenty-two years. He is the creator of many documentaries and the author of books about nature. They both then became farmers and permaculture educators. Their experiment to produce more food in the most ecological way succeeded and ultimately resulted in the creation of a production model for future generations. This model serves as a precursor to the vision of a carbon-free future — when oil is no longer the driving force of goods and services, energy will be scarcer, and the need for local production will be essential.
