There is no doubt that Aleister Crowley was one of the most enigmatic, intriguing, exciting, and controversial figures in the field of 20th-century occultism. He was certainly the most significant name in the realm of sexual magic - magick, as he spelled it in contrast to conventional magic - and the founder of a true "school," a current of inner thought that continues to thrive to this day.
During a visit to the Boulaq Museum in Cairo, Rose (his first wife) would show him an exhibit of Ra-Hoor-Khuit (one of the many names of the god Horus) that, by strange coincidence, bore the number 666, the number of the "Beast of the Apocalypse." This exhibit is what Crowley would later refer to as the "Stone of Revelation."
There, Crowley would have a three-day mystical experience, a "contact" with a supernatural entity that would dictate to him the "Book of the Law," the most famous but perhaps the darkest and most enigmatic of his works. In any case, the 'Book of the Law' or "Liber Al Vel Legis" was Crowley's gospel and the backbone of the system he named with the Greek word "Will," meaning "Will" or "Desire."
