Recently, a highly peculiar individual has vanished from a private clinic for the mentally ill, near Providence, Rhode Island. This person was named Charles Dexter Ward, and he had been placed there, very reluctantly, under the care of his unfortunate father, who had witnessed his son's mental illness evolve from mere eccentricity into a dark obsession - an obsession that included both the potential for violent tendencies and a peculiar alteration in the overt contents of his mind.
The doctors admit that they are completely at a loss with his case, as the patient exhibited strange peculiarities, both physical and psychological in nature.
