The Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament. Its name comes from a mistranslation by the Septuagint (LXX) in Deut. 17:18, where the Hebrew phrase 'a copy of the law' was incorrectly translated as 'this Deuteronomy.' However, this mistake is not serious, as Deuteronomy is actually a repetition of the law of Moses.
Deuteronomy consists of three major speeches given by Moses before his death to the people, in the plains of Moab, where he has camped, opposite Jericho. Soon the Israelites will enter the Promised Land, and Moses wants to remind them of the covenant they made with God at Mount Horeb (that is, Sinai), and to teach the new generation of Israelites the divine law, renewing the divine covenant with them.
