In the context of his interpretative Homilies, Saint John Chrysostom extensively engaged with the Holy Scriptures. Preferring to choose scriptural passages, he interprets and delves into them, usually not neglecting the constructive extensions.
This is because he typically speaks in front of a congregation and is concerned with the spiritual cultivation and moral instruction of his listeners. Beneath the letter of the text, he often seeks various symbols.
In the year 386, he delivered a series of 9 Homilies in Antioch, in which he interpreted the first chapters of Genesis, while two years later, he delivered another series of 67 Homilies for the remaining ones.
This volume includes Homilies II-VII, which interpret verses 1-21 of the first chapter of Genesis, that is, from the creation of heaven and earth, until the end of the fifth day of God's creative work.
