The study of university speeches offers opportunities to highlight aspects not only of the Greek University but also of Greek society and history.
The present book examines the public university discourse as it is presented through speeches delivered from 1837 to 1911. It presents and evaluates in chronological order the formal speeches of Rectors and Professors of the University of Athens at central academic ceremonies and events.
Specifically, it studies the speeches of the rectorial authorities during the handover of the rectorship, the speeches for the celebration of the Three Hierarchs, the anniversary of the establishment of the University, and finally, those on March 25th. In the context of the research, the ideological-political origins and axes, perceptions, positions, and transformations of public discourse were sought.
The economic, social, and political context, along with the academic reality, are captured in these speeches, highlighting the role and discourse of the University of Athens in the public life of the country.
