The tradition of political realism and adaptability of Rome placed the imperium above its cradle, the urbs. The concept and realization of the imperium linked the urbs and orbis into a new unity, to recall the famous saying of the Gallic Roman noble of the 5th century AD, Rutilius Namatianus, who said addressing Rome: "urbem fecisti quod prius orbis erat" ("you made a city what once was the world").
It is one of the wise ironies of history that this admiring phrase was articulated by a convert to the Roman ideal, a descendant of those whom Rome had previously associated with the idea of a fearsome opponent. Rome continued (until the Late Antiquity) to victoriously stamp its political identity over any initial national origin.
The elixir of Roman resilience has not waned. The milk of the she-wolf does not seem likely to lose either its flavor or its spiritual nourishment, especially for the conscious cosmopolitans of every era and political predisposition. Roman History is inherently contemporary.
