The revival of Byzantine art, particularly painting, came to the forefront of visual arts in Western Europe during the early decades of the 20th century, driven by Russian thinkers as well as visual artists who played a leading role in the modernism movement.

We will set the framework for our study and delineate the visual material that will serve as our reference field. Next, after briefly presenting the fundamental views on abstraction, we will examine "microscopically" selected works of Byzantine painting in order to ascertain whether there is abstraction in Byzantine visual form.

Our main concern thereafter and ultimate goal will be to determine the types of abstract tendencies in Byzantine painting and to trace the reasoning that supports them.
