This edition was published on the occasion of the photography exhibition of the same name organized by the British Council, the Institute of Migration Policy (I.ME.PO.), and the Cultural Foundation of National Bank in the exhibition space of the Eynard Mansion (November 13, 2007 - January 13, 2008).
Never before have the residents of Athens been so numerous and so diverse from one another. Athens is transforming, becoming a metropolis, and the identities of all of us are being redefined. Migrants are fueling the city's life with unprecedented energy, bringing with them the power to create new worlds that coexist and interact with the old one.
Fourteen young photographers traveled for fourteen months through the streets of Athens with the aim of capturing their own image of life in a city that is constantly changing. At the same time, students of different nationalities from ten schools in the Attica region recorded moments of their own daily lives in the neighborhoods, at home, and at school.
The images of the photographers and students are fleeting looks from people with different backgrounds and directions on the city they live in. They provide the opportunity to re-envision the city in which we will live tomorrow.
The photographs from their journey through the city's streets formed the basis for a series of exhibitions titled "City Streets/Οι δρόμοι της πόλης." The selection of photographs for the exhibition and the catalog, the photographic workshops, as well as the artistic direction of the program were signed by photographer Nikos Oikonomopoulos. The scientific supervision was conducted by anthropologist Nandina Christopoulou, while the school photographic workshops were coordinated by photographer Kamilo Nollas.
The photographers participating in the exhibition are: Emmanouela Argyropoulou, Maria Vidali, Vaggelis Georgas, Achilleas Zavallis, Vanessa Zohiu, Ioanna Katsarou, Anastasia Kourbela, Fotis Matsoukas, Marina Nikolova, Chrysa Posnakidou, Giannis Simos, Christos Stefanou, Henry Tsanai, Nemat Hassan.
The exhibition "City Streets/Οι δρόμοι της πόλης" is organized as part of the project of the same name, which is an initiative of the British Council and the Institute of Migration Policy (I.ME.PO.) and aims to encourage open intercultural dialogue and enhance social cohesion and respect for the right to difference.
