    One of N. Kazantzakis' early works, almost unknown to most people but worth someone's read. It is quite melancholic and depressing due to the influence of sensibility, yet it does not make it any less good than his other works.

Description & Specifications

"Broken Souls" is the first novel written by Nikos Kazantzakis, and he wrote it in Paris during the first half of 1908. From July to November, he was in Crete, and from the end of November, he was back in Paris. The novel was published in twenty-four installments in the magazine "Noumas" in Athens, from 1909-1910, and Kazantzakis presented it under a pseudonym: Petros Psiloritis. There has been no other publication of it since.

Before "Broken Souls," Kazantzakis wrote another prose work, "Serpent and Lily." It was published in 1906, but it is not purely a novel. It can be characterized as a novella and is a lyrical literary transformation of his first love, with his English teacher in Heraklion, the Irishwoman Kathleen Forde. He also wrote plays before "Broken Souls" and was involved in journalism. At twenty-five years old, he already had a rich literary output.

The author dedicated "Broken Souls" to Petroula Psiloritis, and the warm dedication is prefixed to the novel. Petroula Psiloritis was Galatia Alexiou, his beloved at the time, later his wife, with whom he did not get along, leading to separation and divorce, which was finalized in 1926.

During the publication of the novel in "Noumas," Kazantzakis felt it necessary to provide information and explanations about "Broken Souls": "to briefly explain the reason and purpose for writing this romance and its place in some of my complex ideas," and also "why I wrote 'Broken Souls' so morbidly, pessimistically, and negatively." This was done during the publication of the fifth installment of the novel. This means that the novel did not go unnoticed. It stirred the literary waters of the capital, creating sensation and uproar, which forced Kazantzakis to intervene and provide explanations. This text of his, published in "Noumas" on September 27, 1909, about a month after the publication of the work began, follows the novel in our edition. [...]
