July 2005 and the entire globe is watching Scotland. The leaders of the G8, the group of the eight most powerful nations in the world, have gathered in the capital city, and the police have reached their limits with the daily marches, protests, and clashes in the streets.
Despite this, a security officer is considered unnecessary. Inspector John Rebus has been sidelined for fear of embarrassing his superiors at such a critical time. However, all this changes when the plunge of a young politician from the walls of Edinburgh Castle brings Rebus back into the spotlight.
The suicide must be proven, and quickly, so that his death doesn't steal the show. However, this particular case is overshadowed by another - a more dangerous - threat. Mysterious evidence found in the forest near the ancient Cloutie Well outside Edinburgh indicates the existence of a serial killer who is on the loose, a killer specializing in eliminating released rapists.
The authorities are eager to suppress both matters in order to not overshadow a summit of universal significance. However, Rebus has never blindly followed the rules, and when his colleague Siobhan Clarke embarks on a frantic search for the officer who attacked her mother, it begins to become clear that both Rebus and Clarke may have gotten into serious trouble...
