Description

The WD Purple series of drives is designed for surveillance systems with a SATA III interface. They are specifically built for high-definition security systems within an NVR environment, supporting a workload of up to 180 TB/year and providing support for up to 64 cameras.

Features

  • Storage without compromise with WD Purple Surveillance hard drive

WD Purple drives are specifically designed for surveillance to withstand the increased heat fluctuations and equipment vibrations in NVR environments. An average desktop drive is built to operate only for short intervals, not for the harsh 24/7 always-on environment of a high-definition surveillance system. With WD Purple, you get reliable surveillance-class storage that has been tested for compatibility in a wide range of security systems. The exclusive AllFrame™ technology helps reduce frame loss and improve overall video playback.

  • Western Digital's exclusive AllFrame technology

All WD Purple drives are equipped with AllFrame technology, which improves ATA streaming to reduce frame loss and improve overall video playback, across a multitude of security video solutions.

  • Enhanced workload ratings

WD Purple™ drives feature a workload rating of up to 180 TB/year - up to three times that of desktop drives - to meet the unique demands of mainstream DVR and NVR video surveillance systems.

  • Multiple cameras, multiple streams

Modern recorders now support multiple video streams per camera. WD Purple drives support up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and can also support many of the latest cameras that transmit multiple streams to enable basic AI functionality. With so many options, you have the flexibility to upgrade or expand your security applications in the future.

  • Designed for today's and tomorrow's surveillance solutions

With MTBF of up to 1 million hours, WD Purple drives are designed for general surveillance DVRs and NVRs that operate 24/7. With tarnished components and support for more than eight bays, WD Purple drives provide reliable operation even in harsh environments.

  • Proactive storage management with WDDA

Western Digital Device Analytics™ (WDDA) provides a wealth of parametric operational and diagnostic storage device data to the system. Algorithms interpret the data and direct the system to alert system administrators to specific recommended actions to address potential issues. WDDA is intended to empower OEMs, system integrators, and IT professionals to better monitor and proactively manage supported storage devices to maintain optimal operation.

It worked well for 3 years and now neither the console nor other computers can see it from the cameras when I connected it to test it. I believe it should have lasted a little longer, in the past I used to change the disk preventively in five years while they still worked.

I bought a 2Tb and it worked on a recorder for 2 years without any problem.
Then I bought a 3Tb for the same job and it broke within the warranty period (in 1 year and something).
I sent it to Germany for warranty check because unfortunately the store where I bought it from had closed.
I was charged for the shipping to Germany, of course, but they sent me a new one back immediately (with a one-year warranty).
I give it five stars and I'm waiting to see how it will perform.

October 2023 - 3 years later with 5 cameras recording 24/7, everything is fine. It has been installed in a UDM Pro for a year now, but sometimes it takes a long time to load the videos. So, I bought a WD purple with 7200 RPM to try it out since ubiquiti recommends it. The RPM of the hard drive is not necessarily the cause of this problem that is observed, but it was time for a change with an 8Tb one!

It is used in a recorder. Besides some noise, I haven't seen anything else, but the HDD will make noise. A very good choice.

    2. Choose DVR disks for recorders, regular HDDs are not suitable for continuous operation.

I've had it for a month and bought it solely for DVR/NVR purposes, trusting the user comments here. It's really quiet! It doesn't raise the temperature. I'll come back for a summary after 1 year...

    Update 11-2021
It has been three years since I started using it and the hard drive has absolutely no problems and works perfectly! For all this time, it has been constantly recording and deleting with the recorder, and no problems have arisen. If you really want it for a recorder and to work 24/7, I highly recommend it.
