This book was written to serve as an introductory manual of Biochemistry for students in health professions. An effort has been made to describe in the simplest possible way the structure, functionality, properties, and metabolism of the main categories of macromolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids), as well as the fundamental biochemical pathways.
For each category of biomolecules, after describing their structure and functionality, their fate is tracked from their entry into the organism through food to their final decomposition. Finally, the mechanism of endogenous biosynthesis of the molecules is described. Additionally, there is a specific reference to hormones, vitamins, and trace elements.
Since the book is aimed at future professionals in the health field, aspects of plant biochemistry are omitted, while there is a mention of the biochemical basis of diseases. Finally, prompted by the study of the properties of biomolecules, there is a reference to their application in biochemical techniques, many of which are utilized for diagnostic purposes.
We hope that we have managed, within the limited space of this book, to provide a comprehensive image of the structure of the human organism and the biochemical functions that take place within it. Our goal is for this book to serve as a fundamental biochemical tool and a stimulus for further bibliographic research.
