The Dream is the most erotic of all Shakespeare's works, and undoubtedly, in no other tragedy or comedy of his, apart from Troilus and Cressida, is eroticism expressed so bluntly.
The theatrical tradition of teaching The Dream is particularly unbearable, both in its classical line, with lovers wearing Greek chitons and the marble stairs in the background, and in the opera-inspired version, with the sheer veils fluttering and the creatures flying across the stage.
For a long time, theatre has presented The Dream as if it were a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, and undoubtedly, this is the reason why the violence, the brutality of situations and dialogues disappear from the stage.
