Modern Ireland, the year 2005. Jerry Fegan is an IRA hitman who has been active for nearly thirty years. At forty-five years old, he is an alcoholic and rather mentally disturbed.

Twelve ghosts of his former victims - perhaps the most heinous and unjust murders he has committed - haunt him and speak to him in a secret language, showing him how he can atone.

In his quest for redemption, Jerry will proceed to eliminate those who ordered or were the masterminds behind these specific murders. The revenge he takes for each of the victims is equivalent to the removal of a ghost.

All of this is happening while peace negotiations are underway in Northern Ireland, and these murders threaten to blow them apart.

Maybe if he had one more drink, they would leave him alone. Jerry Fegan told himself this lie every time before he swallowed. He extinguished the burn from the whiskey with a strong gulp of Guinness and placed the glass back on the table. "Look up and they will disappear," he thought. And yet. They were still there, staring at him persistently. Twelve in total, if he counted the baby in his mother's arms. He was thoroughly drunk now. When his stomach could take no more, he would let Tom, the bartender, take him outside, and then the twelve would follow him through the streets of Belfast, enter his house, climb the stairs, and come into his bedroom. If he was lucky, and drunk enough, he would faint before their screams became unbearable.

    "Τα φαντάσματα του Μπέλφαστ" είναι ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον noir μυθιστόρημα. Έχει καταιγιστική δράση και αν και δεν έχει ιδιαίτερη πλοκή, κρατά αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη. Η υπόθεση εκτυλίσσεται στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία και είναι συνδεμένη με όσα συνέβαιναν εκεί μεταξύ Προτεσταντών και Καθολικών, Πιστών και Ενωτικών. Μέσα από την εξιστόρηση της υπόθεσης, ο συγγραφέας σε βάζει στο κλίμα των δεκαετιών '60 έως και '80 αλλά και το πως εξελίχθηκε το Ιρλανδικό θέμα στη σύγχρονη εποχή. Τα φαντάσματα των ανθρώπων που αδίκως εκτελέσθηκαν στοιχειώνουν τη συνείδηση και τη καθημερινότητα του ήρωα. Μόνο ένας τρόπος υπάρχει για να απαλλαχθεί από αυτά. Και δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολος... Από τις πρώτες σελίδες καταλαβαίνεις πως αυτό το μυθιστόρημα θα σε κρατήσει. Οι χαρακτήρες είναι πολύ καλά δομημένοι και η περιγραφή της ιστορίας του καθενός, μέσα στην έκταση του μυθιστορήματος, είναι ολοκληρωμένη. Το τέλος παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον αλλά και ανατροπές! Σε αφήνει με μία πικρόγλυκη "γεύση" αλλά και με ένα αίσθημα ικανοποίησης.
