The plot unfolds in 1907, when the Macedonian Struggle was at its peak, and the Greek fighters, Captain Agras and Captain Nikiforos, had secured significant successes supporting the persecuted Greek populations. However, the Bulgarian komitadjis proved to be violent and tough opponents, and the heroic Greek fighters, coming from free Greece, along with the locals, had to continue fighting to cope with a difficult and uneven struggle. Amidst these historical events and alongside real historical figures, fictional characters are intertwined—mainly the children, Apostolis and the tender "little Bulgarian," Giovan. Thus, history and education in high ideals—patriotism, courage, truthfulness, and dignity—as well as the understanding of human nature, form the canvas of this unique historical novel, published in 1937.
