Don Juan was a real person who became a hero of Spanish mythology and a symbol of the merciless lover with thousands of mistresses and countless enemies.

The first theatrical creator of him was the Spanish Tirso de Molina (1630), but Don Juan became globally known from Molière's eponymous work (1665), which is considered his most poetic, a sad farce of life and death.
