School violence and bullying have been at the center of social, educational, and scientific interest in our country in recent years. Various methods are being used to address these issues, including school mediation.
School mediation is an alternative practice for resolving tensions and conflicts among students and addressing violence and bullying in schools. Although it has been implemented abroad since the 1980s, it has been applied in Greece for the past ten years in individual schools, with very positive results. Educators have shown strong interest in the implementation of the program in schools.
This book aims to contribute to this direction, presenting: the key dimensions of school violence and bullying (definition, forms, factors, and ways to address them), the theoretical framework of school mediation (restorative justice, definition, purpose, principles, and characteristics), and the application of school mediation in schools (informing and involving members of the school community, investigating the school climate, selecting and training students, evaluating the program).
Theory and practice are presented as a unified whole and are accompanied by rich empirical material and examples from their implementation in schools. For this purpose, a detailed training guide for students is included for Elementary School, Middle School, and Kindergarten.
The book is aimed at students, educators, and parents and seeks to contribute to the dissemination of the application of mediation in schools and society more broadly.
The Network of Schools for School Mediation at the Laboratory of Pedagogy and Teaching Methodology of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the University of Ioannina operates in support of schools that implement/will implement school mediation, if they wish.
