Jim dipped his hand into the trough and stirred the moon, breaking it into streams of light that swirled around. He wet his forehead with his damp hands and stood up. This time he didn’t move as quietly, but he crossed the kitchen on the tips of his toes and stopped at the door of the bedroom.
Yelka moved her arm and opened her eyes slightly. Then, her eyes opened wide, then they shone, wet. Jim looked into her eyes; his face was expressionless. A small drop ran from Yelka's nose and settled in the hollow of her upper lip. She looked at him intently as well.
Jim raised the hammer of the rifle. The metallic sound echoed throughout the house. The man in the bed tossed and turned restlessly in his sleep. Jim's hands trembled. He raised the gun to his shoulder and tightened his grip to stop the shaking. From the sight, he saw the small white square between the man's eyebrows and hair. The front sight wobbled for a moment and then remained still.
The bang of the shot shattered the air. Jim, still looking behind the barrel, saw the entire bed shake from the impact. A small, black, bloodless hole opened in the man’s forehead. Behind, however, the hollow mark took brains and bones and spilled them onto the pillow...
