Description

The Mother and the Meaning of Life is the second collection of narratives by Irvin D. Yalom, after The Spinoza Problem. With bold honesty, the psychiatrist-author brings to life, in this most personal of his books, his limitations and mistakes, his fantasies, doubts, and experiments, and through this journey towards understanding, learning, and finally teaching.

Four true/autobiographical stories and two fictional narratives featuring Ernest Lash, the psychotherapist from the novel In the Couch, compose a mosaic of stunning situations that constantly move in and out of the boundaries of psychotherapy, exploring from another perspective the inexhaustible issues of life and death, freedom and responsibility, meaning and existence and its loss, loneliness and society.

It is the first book of Yalom that I read and despite the fact that there are other much more famous masterpieces of his, I think it remains my favorite. Yalom has a magical way of not tiring the reader and not disappointing him. He delves into the heart of psychoanalysis, never forgetting the fear of death that humans constantly experience. It is worth reading and especially worth immersing yourself in his way of thinking.
