The journey of the Sociology of Education in Greece has been intricate and often encountered significant obstacles. Perhaps the most important of these is the confusion of its epistemological identity and research subject with the epistemological views and research approaches of other educational sciences.
However, the scientific field of Sociology of Education in Greece, and especially internationally, has highlighted a significant variety of research areas and methodological tools. The science of Sociology has its own conceptual and methodological arsenal, just like the field of Sociology of Education.
In the book you hold in your hands, we have attempted to substantiate the epistemological nature of the Sociology of Education, to present as analytically as possible its fundamental sociological theories, and to develop some of the topics that concern the Sociology of Education, which, at least we believe, are important.
Obviously, no book can be exhaustive, nor can we, the authors, claim that we have achieved such a thing. However, we have systematically and persistently tried to meet the goals we set, and we hope, at least, to have clarified what the Sociology of Education studies and how it does so.
