Description

The book by Th. K. Voyiatzis outlines the activities of the National Agricultural Association of Anti-Communist Action (EASAD), an armed collaborationist organization in the Volos area, through contemporary newspaper publications, personal testimonies, archival sources, and related literature.

Of course, the author, attempting to illuminate the activities of EASAD, situates us within the history of the labor movement in Volos, under the conditions that prevailed after the triple fascist occupation, and the activities of the KKE and the EAM organizations. The author’s research could be characterized as "local," in the sense that it maintains its relative autonomy from the historical events that took place in the rest of the country, while not ignoring or sidelining them.

On the contrary, it operates within their broader context. What this particular research demonstrates is that even in Volos, the general trends of the evolution of the liberation movement and class struggle in our country were expressed (how could it have been any different?). In this sense, the present research, beyond many elements related to the history of Volos and the labor and EAM movement, offers insights that contribute to a better understanding of class struggle during the 1940s.

The history of EASAD, therefore, serves as a local mirror through which one can view an entire historical period. Any local peculiarities (the absence of Security Battalions, the delayed formation of a local collaborationist organization) not only do not undermine the general framework but are shown to be interconnected with it.

Today, a number of historians-apologists of the bourgeois power attempt to use so-called micro-history to distort historical reality and bring it in line with their objectives. The greatest value of this “local” research may lie precisely in the fact that it overturns such ideological constructs.
