The book provides an introduction to the most important theoretical foundations and methodological approaches of Comparative Politics, using selected examples of governance systems in Western Europe and North America.
This purpose is served by the approaches of new institutionalism and constructivism, which have only been widely applied in Comparative Politics in recent years. It also includes an increasing understanding of, for example, convergence with explanatory models and approaches of International Politics.
Featuring characteristic examples of parliamentary, presidential systems, and systems of direct democracy such as those of Great Britain, the USA, and Switzerland, the different principles and structures, along with the consequently diverse political processes and outcomes of each policy, are explained.
Finally, the future of nation-states is presented within the context of regional integration and globalization.
