Written in 1922, it is one of the most structured plays about the subjectivity of memory that Luigi Pirandello dramatizes. Ersilia Dreis finds herself in a moral deadlock and, after a failed suicide attempt, ends up in the home of the writer Ludovico Nota.
As the play progresses, it will become evident that all the characters, double-faced like Janus, stubbornly uphold their own subjective truth, posing metaphysical and unanswered questions to the audience about the essence of humanity.
