Democracy is not just about electoral processes, party rivalries, and the pursuit of power. It primarily has a moral dimension. It concerns humanity and its fulfillment, its emancipation from bondage, and the formation of a society of freedom, equality, and solidarity.
It also involves reflection, discussions, and confrontations regarding its values and principles and their application, for the continuous improvement of its quality, and for the rules that govern social life. All of these constitute the living content of democracy. It is the subject of politics.
If substantive politics returns to the center in a way visible to citizens, if schematic politics is limited, then citizens will once again turn their interest to political processes. They will feel the relevance of political participation.
It is the way to become active members of society, to realize their social responsibility, and to support social changes. We have an obligation to ensure this participation, especially those forces that oppose conservative authoritarianism and believe in an open society of responsibility. Democracy will thus achieve a new level of quality.
