A commented edition of an ancient Greek or Latin text is a valuable acquisition for any scholar and primarily for those focused on the Greek literature. The edition of Caesar's memoirs by the late Eustratios D. Tsakalotos was a significant contribution for its time.
However, the subsequent establishment of the memoirs of the Gallic War alongside those of the Civil War of Caesar as material to be examined in Latin for the introductory exams of the theoretical departments of the universities in the country posed problems related to this edition.
Firstly, the text of the edition had deficiencies due to the critical edition used and typographical omissions as well as other reasons. Secondly, the translation was archaic and largely inadequate, distancing itself from the fidelity of the text, creating problems for those studying Latin, particularly for candidates with little experience.
Moreover, the significant contribution of the edition, the comments, though archaic and not user-friendly, did not provide the necessary help to the students. Motivated by the aforementioned deficiencies of the edition, and the difficulties it posed for our students, we undertook a complete revision of it.
Thus, we used the text of the critical edition from Oxford edited by Renatus du Pontet. Generally speaking, the text of the Oxford edition is considered the most accurate, complete, and with the fewest gaps arising from the destruction of the manuscripts.
The translation of the text was placed in correspondence with the original text, precise and in syntactical order, simple and complete, and in the linguistic form required for the examinations. Where we had to propose a translation slightly divergent from the text for clarity due to the deficiencies of the text, we accurately accepted the corrections of the edition and informed the scholar with a particular note.
Finally, we revised, simplified, and updated the comments so that they would become user-friendly and suitable for the scholar, placing them at the end of each book. With all these innovations, we are confident that we are providing candidates with an excellent aid of equal value to our fully acclaimed edition of Caesar's memoirs of the Civil War (1968).
We have retained the name and surname of the author of the first edition in the new edition alongside our name and surname. Furthermore, it is appropriate from this position to thank the publisher Mr. Dimitrios Papadiman, who provided all the means for the creation of a new and excellent edition.
