Description & Specifications

During the seven years of the dictatorship, which most of us have forgotten - some because we were away and others because we were not affected - Greek citizens from all social classes suffered and were endangered by violence and irrational brutality. Among them was the appointed lecturer at that time in the Department of Classical Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, D. N. Maronitis. He did not sit idly by throughout the duration of the seven years, resulting in frequent stays in the holding cells of the second city and Athens.

The "Last Station" of this journey was his arrest in early 1973 with a "near-fatal outcome: perforation, delayed transfer to the Military Hospital, but a lifesaving operation the next day by the brave and honorable surgeon Major Vasonis, thereafter isolation in a ward of the Psychiatric Department until mid-August, when the general amnesty was announced and realized." How distant and foreign all this seems today: eight months in prison, uncertain what awaits, and universal terror.

A mark of those times is the "Black Serenity": a text written in the cell, on paper napkins, and first published in October 1973 in the eighth and final issue of the magazine "Continuity". Cryptic lyricism, mixed technique, associative flow, hallucinatory and paranoid representation of a marginal experience.

The commemorative - forty years after the coup - edition of Black Serenity is accompanied by 27 photographs: the painter Nana Vetta captures with her digital camera the dimension of "nightmare" and the concept of "intrinsic fear" within unexpected materials and landscapes.
