PRESENTER: May you go well. (Mrs. Bach is leaving)
Magdalena lived ten more years in poverty and misery after the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. A rare woman, she had loved her husband and his fugues as any exemplary devoted and charismatic being would. (She opens Magdalena Bach's book and reads.)
“Just before Bach died, his grandson offered him a red rose and he, looking at it in awe, said: ‘But where I am going, there are more beautiful things, more beautiful colors, there is music that neither you nor I have ever heard, music that we can only dream of, and there is the Lord Himself.’ He then added, ‘Play some music for me, sing me something beautiful about death because their time has come.’ I then started to sing the chorus 'all men must die,' which was immediately joined by the other attendees...’’
Bach, although poor, had quite a significant collection of instruments, which he acquired with great sacrifice. The money he earned was never enough to cover the enormous needs of his large family. Magdalena often complained that Handel, though not as great a musician as her husband, nevertheless earned much more than he did. Handel was proud of his collection of paintings, while on the walls of Bach's house there were only his own portrait and that of his wife.
