But the road to enlightenment is rough and requires courage. To reach perfect purity, a person must escape the opposing currents of love and hate, sympathy and antipathy, and must be perfectly free from passions in thought, speech, and action.

I know that I do not possess this triple purity, despite my unceasing effort to achieve it; this is why the praises of the world do not bring me pleasure and often bring me sadness.

The taming of the passions seems to me much more difficult than conquering the world with the power of arms.
