Americans often believe that the global role of the U.S. is beneficial and that no one questions their dominant position; however, other states, increasingly concerned about U.S. dominance, are beginning to transform their concerns into action.
In this aesthetically pleasing and provocative book, Stephen Walt analyzes the various strategies of resistance to U.S. hegemony that different states are developing in order to counteract U.S. power or to harness it for their own purposes.
These reactions impose limitations on the ability of the United States to achieve its foreign policy goals and may ultimately undermine its hegemony.
To prevent this development, Walt argues, the United States must adopt a different foreign policy that is more welcome or at least tolerable to other states and not a policy that reinforces the fears they have of American power.
