1974 marks a turning point in our literature, which is divided into an initial period, ideologically charged, and a second, free from traumatic experiences. The division does not entail evaluative judgments. Each period has its own meanings and values.
The content of the current volumes Z` and H` is offered for the following assessments: In 1974, it seems that the chapter of interwar prose is coming to a close, first due to symptomatic reasons (many of its leading representatives have passed away), but it may also be considered that the ideological field to which they referred has been exhausted. The same may have happened with the corresponding poetry.
However, if we consider the first great figures (Elytis, Eggonopoulos, Ritsos), it not only appears but is also confirmed that it continues to breathe even beyond the storms. From the 1960s onwards, a new generation of post-war prose writers has begun to assert its presence, differentiating the dominant landscape of the prose of the '30s.
Similarly, and perhaps more quickly observed, post-war poets, through their work, oversaw a new poetic situation which was positively appreciated and evaluated, albeit timidly and sporadically.
With the sense that the evaluation, particularly of post-war literature, remains pending as long as the conditions for its overall and comparative accessibility do not mature, the current work has made an effort to document it equally and comprehensively so that it can now be placed in terms of dialogue, as it is required and deserves.
