The heroine of Papadiamandis' story "The Nostalgic" is infused with a dreamy poeticism in her words and actions, as she constantly leans towards returning to her homeland. She feels powerless to live away from her place and her loved ones, and she returns there, having just managed to express her compassion for a younger person, who brought her back to her homeland with a foreign boat.
Kostis Palamas loved this story, described Papadiamandis as the "singer of the Nostalgic," and wrote that the Muse of Papadiamandis is like the heroine, the Nostalgic, "living most of the time as if immersed in a dream of her faraway homeland".
