The volume is a companion publication to the homonymous exhibition, which was presented at the Benaki Museum (Main building) from September 28 to November 19, 2017.
The publication, with its rich illustrations and well-documented texts, depicts the journey of the company "ICARO – IKAROS" (1928-1988) and is the first substantial effort to highlight the overall history of the factory, which is inextricably linked to the island of Rhodes.
The IKAROS ceramic art industry was a significant pillar for the economy of Rhodes, both during the period of Italian rule and after the island's incorporation into Greece. It remained in continuous operation for almost 60 years, producing a vast variety of ceramic products, such as decorative plates, vases, jugs, tableware, figurines, female figures in traditional costumes, animal-shaped ornaments, and more.
It was closely connected to the local community through the absorption of significant labor force as well as through the production of products that are characteristic samples of the island's domestic industrial production during the last century.
