William Kamkwamba was born in Malawi, in a country and at a time when magic still reigned, science was a mystery, hunger and drought were a daily reality, hope was futile, and opportunities were nonexistent.

Faced with all kinds of adversities, a child from a large family that could not afford to provide him with the education that would allow him to pursue his passion for science, William had a "crazy" idea.
