The external biography of Sigmund Freud - in contrast to his internal one, which bears all the characteristics of the Tragic - was, when viewed as a whole, neither very unusual nor very spectacular. Ten years before his death, he explained to Edward Bernay that his life `flowed extremely quietly and without content, and with few elements to classify`.
Freud's biographer, Peter Gray, succinctly added to this statement: `He was born, studied, traveled, married, practiced medicine, gave his lectures, published, clashed, aged, died`. Also, Freud essentially spent his entire life, 78 years, in Vienna, in a city to which he was bound by a strong feeling of both love and hate.
When he had to leave it shortly before his death, he wrote: `The triumph of the feeling of liberation is very much mixed with the mechanism of grief, for one has come to love the prison from which one is allowed to leave`.
The unremarkable, both in Freud's professional and private life, corresponds to the ever-present Viennese subtlety, which constitutes the atmosphere in which a work was developed and matured that may not have anything specifically Viennese about it, yet certainly has its roots in a European metropolis to which Freud harbored exceptionally strong feelings.
