The Quran is the oldest and, to this day, the most perfect work of classical Arabic prose. For Muslims, it is the infallible word of God, a copy of the Book of God, which exists in heaven and was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Spirit of God, that is, the archangel Gabriel.

In addition to the original verses and some passages where the Prophet or the archangel Gabriel speaks in the first person, the speaker throughout the text is God, who usually speaks in the first person plural, often changing to the first or third person singular; these changes sometimes even occur within the same sentence.
