Description

In the relatively new field of Greek as a foreign language, there is a great need for comparative, learner-centered studies inspired by the successes of theoretical linguistics. There are many textbooks and "educational products" for teaching Greek as a foreign language, but there is a lack of identified linguistic studies on which all types of educational tools should normally be based. This volume seeks to fill part of this gap, with its authors all coming from the field of theoretical linguistics.
Each of the four studies collected in this volume focuses on a different grammatical phenomenon or subsystem of Modern Greek: the order of terms is examined by Chrysoula Laskaratos and Michalis Georgiaphentis, voice is examined by Ianthi Maria Tsimpli, inflections are examined by Eirini Philippaki-Warburton and Vassilis Spyropoulos, and noun determiners are examined by Eirini Tsamadou-Jacoberger and Despina Chela-Markopoulou.
Each study aims to demonstrate the interactions of the examined grammatical subsystem with other subsystems, as well as the general principles of syntactic organization that apply to it. All four studies give equal emphasis to the structural and functional analysis of linguistic phenomena. They all follow a comparative perspective, which can be particularly useful for those teaching Greek as a foreign language, as comparing the target language, Greek in this case, with the students' native language allows for the prediction of several learning difficulties.

The studies included are:
Chrysoula Laskaratos & Michalis Georgiaphentis: "Basic characteristics of the order of prepositional terms in Greek and Turkish"
Ianthi Maria Tsimpli: "Voice in Greek: Description of the system and study of its development in Greek as a first and second/foreign language"
Eirini Philippaki-Warburton & Vassilis Spyropoulos: "The inflectional system of Greek: A comparative view with Turkish and teaching proposals"
Eirini Tsamadou-Jacoberger & Despina Chela-Markopoulou: "The traditional determiners of Modern Greek: Descriptive-comparative and teaching approach".
