Following the success of the first edition, Harry Tomboulidis' book "Uranography - The History and Mythology of the Constellations" is being reissued. This is a unique case of a book. It is the result of tireless work spanning two decades.
The usual approach to collecting data for writing a book is to turn to the literature, whether printed or electronic. In contrast, the search and examination of primary sources is a task of titanic difficulty and is akin to the work of archaeologists. Unless a fortunate circumstance makes this task feasible. Such a thing happened in this case. Harry Tomboulidis was fortunate to work at a university, that of Stockholm, with a multinational staff.
With admirable meticulousness, the author sought the assistance of colleagues of every nationality to verify the validity of a myth or the meaning of a name and to dig deeper to bring to light new findings, such as those that the literature or the internet have not yet recorded, which often lie forgotten in the memories of people and nations, in what we call oral tradition.
The author has thoroughly checked his sources. The book begins with an extremely informative introduction to uranography and continues with 88 chapters dedicated to the corresponding constellations of the sky. These chapters provide a wealth of information with a clear separation, allowing the reader to easily and quickly find what they want: astronomical data is presented in free text, while historical-mythological information is enclosed in text boxes. This separation makes the book very user-friendly.
The rich text is accompanied by tables, maps, and beautiful paintings and engravings depicting the constellations. Ultimately, a book of great practical value and high aesthetic appeal emerges. Harry Tomboulidis' Uranography is a book that offers much and does so correctly. It undoubtedly deserves a place on the shelves of any reader who casts an interested eye on the field of astronomy.
