With this bilingual edition, the Institute of Modern Greek Studies inaugurates a series of books entitled "Greek Language: Synchrony and Diachrony" which covers three themes: (a) the etymology of Greek, (b) linguistic contacts, and (c) the common language and its problems.
Specifically, this first volume includes 23 papers, most of which were presented at the 1st International Conference on the Etymology of the Greek Language (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern), organized by the Institute on November 5th and 6th, 2015, at the Telloglion Foundation of Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The purpose of the Conference, as well as the others that will follow with this content, was to examine theoretical and practical issues related to the etymology of the Greek language in all its periods and forms, dialectal and non-dialectal, and to detect similar issues concerning the wider Balkan region, with an emphasis on the etymological investigation of Greek elements in other Balkan (and not only) languages, as well as to present specific etymological proposals for words in ancient, medieval, and modern Greek.
