Swaying constantly, like a pendulum drawn to multiple poles, modern architecture in Greece opens up topics and raises questions in every direction. Through the texts in this volume, underground philosophical references and cultural influences are revealed, alternative interpretations of antiquity and tradition are illuminated, latent views on society and politics are highlighted, shifts between the local and the international are mapped, and unconscious reactions and resistances to modernity are identified.
Particular importance is given to the architect-creator, to his work as a continuous metamorphosis, and to his desire and ability to propose an ideal condition while being called to solve practical design problems. This collection can also serve as an alternative, concise history of architecture as it negotiates timeless 'symptoms' of architectural theory and practice in 20th century Greece.
