The "Catalogs. Verses about Love" is an anonymous collection of popular romantic poetry from the first half of the 15th century. It is the oldest surviving example of its kind and includes 54 poems, either short or long, narrative or lyrical, which express the romantic feelings of two young people of different sexes, the desires and disappointments provoked by love or deceit and abandonment.
The collection praises the beauty and virtues of the beloved through interesting and original imagery and figures of speech, drawn from nature or the social environment. Many poems are voiced by young men, embodying "masculine speech," while some represent specific literary subgenres, such as the Alphabet and the love letter.
The editor of the edition, V. Panagiotopoulou-Doulavera, offers in the Appendix of the book a broad anthology of similar texts or excerpts from poems of the period 14th-17th century.
