The Misanthrope is undoubtedly the most enigmatic work of Molière. Alceste's confrontation with the hypocritical society of his time inevitably leads him to isolation.
His obsession with morality ultimately makes him a misanthrope. In contrast, his only friend, Philinte, seems to be rewarded for his moderate and compromising stance.
Alceste's weaknesses, which at times drag him into hypocrisy and at other times render him harsh and rigid, leading him to his final exit, do not negate the greatness of his stance but rather complement it, giving it a tragic character.
They present the spectacle of a constant conflict, within which every person can recognize themselves and transcend it. This translation follows the original French text from the first edition of 1667 and was commissioned by the 4Frontal team for the performance "The_Misanthrope" at the Thisseion theater.
