The "Gospel of Philip," written in the Coptic language, was discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945, in a cave alongside many other Gnostic texts.
It is a Gnostic gospel from the 2nd century AD that was used for the catechesis of the initiated. It presents itself as the authentic testimony of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Attributed to one of Jesus' disciples, Philip, it reveals a more human side of his teacher. It portrays a Jesus who is more open in his relationships with people, particularly with Mary Magdalene, his "companion" and partner.
It emphasizes the initiatory "marriage" of the masculine with the feminine, representing a return to the primordial One.
