Description

Since its first publication in 1951, this significant lecture by Erwin Panofsky has remained a subject of intense discussions that transcend the field of art history and extend more broadly into the realm of intellectual thought.

A typical example of the application of the iconological theory developed by Panofsky himself, this study does not merely attempt to interpret an artistic style but aims to bring to light what he called the "intrinsic meaning or intrinsic content" of the broader cultural phenomenon of Gothic architecture. It examines the relationship of Gothic architecture with the deeper, possibly unconscious, spiritual trends of the time and the environment that gave rise to it.

Panofsky starts from the parallelism he perceives between the evolution of Gothic architecture and scholasticism, attempting to establish a causal connection between them. He sees in Gothic forms the expression of the same "spiritual disposition" that characterizes scholasticism, which, during that period and in that specific region, held "something akin to a monopoly on education."

According to Panofsky, the Summa, the quintessential expression of the scholastic spirit, and the cathedral, the quintessential form of Gothic architecture, are governed by the same fundamental principles: (a) wholeness, (b) organization according to a system of homologous parts and parts of parts, and (c) clarity and persuasiveness of the (productive) reasoning.

The main scholastic method of disputatio (as shaped by Abelard with his Sic et Non) served as the model on which the architects of cathedrals also operated. Thus, one can interpret the evolution of Gothic forms from monument to monument.

The critical reader recognizes how deeply Panofsky grasps the theoretical and philosophical background that spans from medieval philosophy to Hegel, Mannheim, and Cassirer, and how skillfully he handles it.

Every reader, whether initiated or uninitiated, will enjoy the captivating way in which he "unlocks" the imposing forms of Gothic cathedrals, revealing an unexpected and fascinating image of the spiritual horizon of the European Middle Ages.

The edition is complemented by two useful glossaries: the first includes foreign terms and phrases used by the author, while the second explains the architectural terminology of the text.
