Modern and Contemporary History

Series Editor: Stratos N. Dordanas

The series aims to highlight works of Greek, Balkan, and broader European history that represent original studies, raise new questions in their comparative dimension, or approach the past reflectively.

In 1940, on the eve of the Greco-Italian war, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) was an organizationally disintegrated party, while the constant shifts in policy pursued by the Communist International towards Nazism caused confusion among communists throughout Europe.

Nevertheless, the KKE managed to reorganize; by 1944 it became a party of power and threatened to radically transform the political system as it had been shaped in the previous decades.

Through unpublished personal testimonies and archival sources, the book explores how this change was achieved—and the price that was often required in numerous cases.

The power structures of the communists in mountainous Greece and the party's politics are examined, both on the national stage and in the various regions of the country.

The journey of Greek communists from the founding of the party to World War II is also presented.

A study of political history in a time of tectonic social upheavals, through the unknown and at times dark aspects of the National Resistance.

Includes photographic material.
