Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities describes a blazing world divided in two – Paris and London during the bloody and brutal French Revolution.
After eighteen years imprisoned in the Bastille, Doctor Manette is released and returns to London, close to his daughter Lucie. Father and daughter are called to court to testify against a young French aristocrat, Charles Darnay, who is falsely accused of treason. By a strange coincidence, Darnay bears a mysterious resemblance to Sydney Carton, the lawyer's assistant who has taken on his defense.
The two men harbor the same tender feelings for Lucie Manette, the daughter of the former Bastille inmate. From the peaceful suburban streets of London, the four central figures of the story are led, against their will, to the blood-soaked streets of Paris where cries for vengeance dominate during the height of the French Revolution. Will they manage to survive under the deadly shadow of the guillotine?
Set against a tumultuous historical backdrop, a grand tale of courage and self-sacrifice unfolds. As cities are destroyed and transformed, and cynics become altruistic heroes, faith in life and a better future becomes not only possible but necessary.
