Description

The location of Greece, at the meeting point of three continents, combined with the rugged terrain that includes numerous high mountains and hundreds of kilometers of coastline, has endowed it with a rich flora that comprises nearly 6,000 different species. This vast number, in relation to its area of just 132,000 square kilometers, ranks it first in Europe in terms of flora density. About 15% of these species are endemic and often find refuge in the safety of gorges and mountains, where human presence is limited or minimal.

The mountains, from Rhodope to Pindus, Olympus, Parnassus, and Taygetus, as well as the three mountain ranges of Crete, host a plethora of rare and unique varieties that, combined with the wonderful hiking trails they offer, define Greece as the botanical paradise of Europe.

This book presents around 600 varieties from the most representative of the Greek flora. Small texts focusing on the botanical characteristics of the plants, mythological references to them, as well as often the etymology of their names, along with more than 1,200 photographs that showcase them in detail as well as their habitats, make their recognition an easy and enjoyable process.
