Description

Description

“In Rome, due to the misconduct of many popes, the official chronicles of the empire state that in 824, conditions had fallen into great confusion. After the death of Charles I, Saint Pope Leo V, in 815, a year before his own death, ruthlessly condemned hundreds of people to death. His successor Stephen IV appeared the following year with a false crown of Constantine in Reims.

At the death of his successor, Paschal I, a despised, harsh pope, in 824, such riots were created that the scheduled funeral for him at St. Peter's was canceled and the corpse remained initially unburied (this pope was also canonized, but his feast was removed in 1963).

The election of his successor, Eugene II (824-827), was followed by riots that lasted for months, as the aristocracy and the clergy supported two rival candidates.”
