Protestantism was and remains the dominant doctrine in the United States, from which American politicians drew inspiration for the theory of the "City upon a Hill," that is, the "exceptionalism" of the U.S. and their global superiority, which developed under a religious cloak in the 19th century.

Visionaries of this doctrine included Protestant missionaries. This book follows the footsteps of American missionaries who, in 1828, arrived in the ruined and deserted Greece, lacking any infrastructure after the Revolution of 1821, aiming to propagate their religious beliefs through the establishment of schools, the publication of books in Modern Greek for students and adults, and the education of women.

Their presence raised suspicions and fears within Greek society, while simultaneously activating defensive mechanisms in the Greek educational system.
